Social Psychology Authority Bias

The Supervisor

You are on shift. A confident Supervisor sends instructions to your queue, one at a time. Each looks a little more wrong than the last. For each one you choose to Comply or Refuse.

1Read each instruction the Supervisor sends.
2Comply to carry it out, or Refuse to stop the queue.
3We will measure how far up the queue you kept obeying.

Authority Bias

Authority bias is our tendency to comply with instructions from a perceived authority even when they conflict with our own judgment or ethics, partly because the authority seems to absorb the responsibility.

It drives "just following orders" failures in companies, hospitals, and institutions, where a confident title overrides individual conscience and nobody stops a clearly wrong action.
